Your Past Will Never Change
As a child, Sadako is painfully shy and rarely socializes with other children. One day, a cousin, Takashi, decides to profit from Shizuko's powers and contacts Dr. Heihachiro Ikuma, a scientist fascinated by psychic powers. Heihachiro and Shizuko eventually form a romantic relationship, and they marry. This union, however, becomes strained when, during a public demonstration of her powers, Shizuko is mocked and insulted by reporters who accuse her of being a fake. Sadako, in defense of her mother, launches a psychic attack which kills the reporter who started the chaos. Sadako suddenly splits into two people; one kind-hearted and timid, the other violent and psychotic. The good Sadako is allowed to live on while the other is kept in seclusion and forced to take growth-inhibiting drugs. Shizuko eventually breaks under the strain and throws herself into Mount Mihara.
Sadako's full origin is revealed in Ring(u) 0. At the age of 19, she joins an acting troupe in Tokyo Osaka Kōchi, and is looked upon as pretty, hardworking, but also a bit strange. But after Aiko, the female lead in the play, insults her, she dies under mysterious circumstances, causing Sadako to be looked upon with suspicion. Unknown to Sadako, her twin is the actual culprit, using her as a conduit. Sadako enters a relationship with a 22-year-old sound editor named Toyama, the only member of the troupe who has shows her kindness, despite the fact that he's already in a relationship with his co-worker. Things get worse when the director decides to cast Sadako to take Aiko's place as the female lead, causing the troupe members (except Toyama) to feel jealous and angry. When the director Shegimori finds out about how "she" killed Aiko and the man who mocked her mother at demonstration, he strangles her violently, only to be saved by Toyama. The two men fight until Shegimori dies and Toyama has a brutal head wound. After he has recovered, Toyama hides the directors dead body while Sadako gets ready on the day of the play (that the troop has worked on for months), Sadako has visions of when her mother was being insulted and she destroys the stage accidentally and killing the doctor who had been counseling her (though her twin was there as well, but not seen). The troupe had already discovered their directors dead body and then the stage and doctor destroyed, so they gang up on Sadako. She is beaten to death by the acting troupe (although Toyama wasn't part of it and mourned her death) and taken to Dr. Ikuma's home, where they intend to finish off the evil Sadako. The plan fails disastrously, resulting in the two Sadakos merging into a single entity of pure destruction. Sadako kills the entire troupe, including Toyama, who tried to help her escape. Eventually, she comes to her senses and mourns her actions. Dr. Ikuma drugs her so she cannot breath, but Sadako escapes to the family well, pleading for her life. Instead, he beats her over the head with an axe and throws her down the well, where she survives by sheer will for 33 years.
During her entrapment, a summer resort is built over the well. Using her powers, Sadako projects a series of images from her past into a blank videotape which, when watched, would kill the viewer after seven days.
